Karin Nielsen, MD, MPH
Karin Nielsen, MD, MPH (Faculty Mentor) is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at UCLA Children’s Hospital. Dr. Nielsen has been Co-Principal Investigator in the Los Angeles Pediatric Brazil AIDS Consortium Award through the NIAID since its inception in 2000. She chaired a number of international HIV clinical studies including HPTN 040/ PACTG 1043, a clinical study of neonatal HIV prophylaxis in Brazil, South Africa and the U.S., and was co-chair of HPTN 052. She has an active collaboration in Porto Alegre, Brazil with the Conceição Hospital Group and in Rio de Janeiro with the Servidores Hospital. Originally from Brazil, she is the Director of the UCLA Center for Brazilian Studies and a faculty member of the Brazilian Scientific Mobility Program for the Brazilian Higher Council of Education (CAPES/ Ministry of Education-Brazil).
